A Year Ago Today

A Year ago today, my mom went to heaven, she left on her own after everyone left for lunch. 


When I got home she already left. She was so still, but still so beautiful. I sat with her and I felt the emptiness in the room.
I spoke to her how I felt and of the things I should have done, it felt like the words just bounced back at me, No Receptor.

I waited till the mortuary transporter came. He was sharply dressed in a suit, soft spoken and very polite.
He hinted for me to go , I told him I was going to stay and walk her out.
 I remembered we always had lingering “goodbyes” when we would visit.
Not a lot of mushy “I love You’s” just thinking of ways to keep our conversations going.  Just Silly, this and thats  and “remember to come again” at the end. 

 The tech. gently, patiently, unfolded the sheets. Covered her and carefully wrapped her. It was a slow process, thoughtful. That help me with my sorrow. It was important that I see she is being treated with respect.

The owner of the care facility seemed hyper and lots of movement in the house taking care of the others. L. V and Lily being very respectful but also had to tend to the others. 
I, Margie and Alicia follow as mom is wheeled out. 
Mike is outside, he touches her wrapped foot and says “bye Olga”. The owner comes out and says “ Bye “ too.

My Mom.

Oo embodied love every single day: love for Pop, my mom and her siblings, my sister and me, my cousins, the dog Petey. She took care of me and my sister when our parents were at work. It was always a happy time to go over to Pop & Oo’s house, which was often. There were the best snacks, cartoons and Disney in the tv, even a Nintendo 64 with all the accessories. There I played, relaxed, studied, practiced piano, and felt loved at a second home. 
Oo would take me and Renee to the mall, Mervyn’s, Robinson’s-May, JC Penney, and always a stop at the comic book store for Pokémon and Sailor Moon goods (like when she bought me the Moon Kingdom palace). This is where my love for fashion developed because we would often get something at those door buster sales.
We would walk to Tamarack Beach or take Petey to the lagoon together after school. 
I’ll also remember the feeling of having just gotten into my PJs and ready for bed in the spare room. I would climb to the wall side of the bed, Renee on the left in case I rolled off, the comfort of fresh linens, and looking up at the ceiling at the light that had the decorative glass that reminded me of reeds in a marsh. Oo and Pop would tuck us in goodnight and we’d sleep peacefully until the next morning when Eggo waffles or scrambled eggs or the perfectly cooked bacon for me and sausage for Renee was ready when we got up. 
Oo was also there for my concerts and competitions, even my senior recital at Chapman University. 
I will always take with me the comfort, love, and guidance you gave me my whole life.

My Mom, amazingly, raised seven kids. That alone demands respect, but being a military family, there were times she had to take over the household while my Dad was away. At those times she not only managed to maintain the household, but somehow made it to my baseball games, worked the concession stand, and bring snacks for my friends. Between work and life she found time to cram the seven of us kids into a van and take the whole family to Disneyland-just one memory I have of our many road trips. I can only imagine what kind of grandmother she was to my nieces and nephews. Thanks mom for putting up with your real little rascals. It couldn’t have been easy. Thanks for the love. 


Never a dull moment with Olga, my mom. 
We had some legendary car rides.

Sweet dreams pretty girl. 

Dearest Olga, I will miss you on earth.  You were my friend  for some 73 years.  Most people aren’t so lucky.  We grew up together and my brother was fortunate to become your soul mate.  You blossomed from a single childhood to becoming the mother of 7 responsible children.  We all admired your tenacity and good nature.  God, your child is returning to you.  I know you are pleased with her and will welcome  her.  Please give her a window seat where she can look down on us and be on hand to welcome us.  Irene, Steve and family
