Mac was raised in the rugged Northwest in Alaska with his parents, Hubert and Elaine, on their homestead, along with his siblings, Sharon Rice and Gary McCutcheon. The family later moved to Southern California, where the siblings' brother Dana was born.
Mac returned to Alaska as an adult, where he worked in a flower shop and met his former wife, Kathleen. They moved east to Connecticut and together owned a flower shop, and shared four children, Christopher, Erin, Megan, and Ethan McCutcheon.
Mac later returned to Fallbrook, California, where he worked at Standish Precision for 30 years. During that time, he was married to Belinda McCutcheon, who passed after many years of marriage.
Mac's love for the natural world, rocks and minerals, and treasure hunting was a steady trait he carried with him for his whole life. His final eleven years were spent with his wife, Barbara McCutcheon in their Fallbrook home.
