Here is the transcript of the message delivered on Auntie Linda's funeral service on November 16, 2012 
10:00 am at First Presbyterian Church, Eternal Hills El Camino Real

May this remind us all how blessed we are to have met such a wonderful person. We will truly miss Auntie Linda.

Auntie Linda was a very private person. 
It is very difficult to paint a complete picture of who she was because she kept pretty much to
herself. But I would like to take this opportunity to share a few of what I 've learned about her life with the very limited time I spent with her.

Auntie Linda lived with my mom for more than 10 years.
She was a constant fixture at home. We often saw her once or twice a day . At each time she was either headed towards the bathroom or towards the kitchen to get some food.Once in a while she sat with us in the living room and dining room for a chat or two.

She was very knowledgeable on current affairs and politics. She was well versed on various things . You can actually talk to her about personal issues or any trivial topic and she has her own experience or her opinion to share about it.

She was extremely smart. Weeks before she was hospitalized she bought her very first personal computer. With just a little aid from my husband and computer tutorial books, she was surfing the internet all by herself. She was also very fond of SUDOKU-this Japanese-inspired mind-boggling puzzle involving numbers. I wont be surprised if auntie managed to reach the intermediate to the more advanced level. We should remember: auntie was a chemical engineering graduate who placed third on the national board exam.

Auntie Linda was very artistic and very creative. She crocheted most of the floor mats and pillow covers at home. She made dolls and sewed clothes for our neighbor. You look around our house you will find one or two items she handcrafted herself or maybe you have one or two in your own homes that she gave you as a gift.

She was an avid collector: stamps, coins from different countries, Buddha figurines, porcelain dolls, colorful and unique decors , you name it. She had a regular subscription from the popular catalogue: "Collections Etc " or "Oriental Trading magazine ." Everyday, without fail, she goes out of her room and heads out to the front door just to check if she has a Fedex package delivery of her new acquisition or a new mail from USPS.

She loved music. When you sit in the living room right next to her bedroom you might hear jazz music wafting through her cd player or turn table: or hear maybe the music of Patsy Kline, Frank Sinatra, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Judy Garland , Elvis Presley, Tom Jones, Louis Armstrong... not only did she love music, she had good taste.

She loved food: I can't say for certain if this was what actually brought Auntie Linda to this predicament in the first place. But it is true, she enjoyed food, it is as simple as that. She even knew how to cook good food: her palabok, kakanin, lumpiang shanghai, lumpiang sariwa . They were awesome!

A lot of you probably will pity her or criticize Auntie Linda for the way she chose to live her life for she never got married nor have kids of her own. She never invested on securities, stocks , or in any property...not even a house.
She also chose a job ill-suited with her academic qualification.
She lived in one room and hardly went out to socialize.
She was someone you might consider reclusive. 

But contrary to what we all think. She was not at all lonely or unhappy .She was actually one of the most contented and one of the happiest people I have ever met. She knew happiness is not determined by how much you earn, how much you have in your savings account or retirement fund; 
she didn't care about career, social recognition or how many friends you have in Facebook.
The economic and social standards we normally would have set for our own lives didn't matter to her.
And I admire her for this. She bravely chose the road less traveled. She chose a different life without fear of being ostracized. She didn't need validation from anyone. She found comfort in her own private place and felt secure even in her solitary life. She enjoyed simple things and she surrounded herself with all the things and only the people she loved and cared for. An occasional rellenong pusit made by Uncle Ben will illicit a smile on her face. When she received a new package her face instantly lit up. She even remarked one time, with a grin on her face: "ang sarap ng buhay ano? kain..tulog..kain..tulog."

And during Christmas time, you will see her excited as she lovingly puts down underneath the Christmas tree every little gift she meticulously chose and wrapped for each one of us. Auntie was a generous giver and though she didn't have much, she knew that no other satisfaction can exceed the inner joy one can obtain from a simple act of giving. I am almost tempted to believe she already purchased in advance some of her Christmas presents for us for this year. She will give generously and extend a helping hand when needed without expecting anything in return.
She was self- sufficient and independent. Instead of asking for help she tended to all her own needs and willingly offered her assistance to anybody who asked for it. She never wanted to inconvenience anyone that even in the end she made sure that all her funeral arrangements were fully paid for and were perfectly in order in case anything happened to her. If you look around you, She took care of all these funeral preparations herself.

I will miss Auntie. I will miss her generous spirit and her love of life. In her deathbed, before she passed away she asked me if there was a single medicine that we can prescribe to her that will make her well again. I realized then, Auntie Linda loved her life and she desperately wished to be granted a few more years to live. It is sad that she had to say goodbye to all of us. But it is better this way that she did not suffer long before she died. She was at peace even in her death.

I will forever remember Auntie and the lessons in life she left behind:" Life is short. Enjoy life while you can. Never let anyone tell you how you should live it. Make the most of what you have. Give whenever you can, live, and love.
