Rudy Gutierrez ended his battle with cancer on February 2nd, 2024 at the age of 71, surrounded by his wife and daughters in San Diego, Ca. The oldest son of Rudy Sr and Vera Gutierrez, Rudy and his four siblings grew up in Solana Beach in an area locals affectionately know as La Colonia de Eden Gardens, a historically strong Mexican community full of family and friends. With a lifelong love for sports, Rudy was a standout athlete at San Dieguito High School where he played football, basketball, baseball and track, but he would proudly say that his greatest high school accomplishment was convincing Julie Prout to go out with him after meeting her at the Del Mar Drive-In because he would go on to marry her and spend 52 years together until his passing. Rudy spent four years serving in the United States Navy where he joined the Blue Jackets Choir, singing at several venues across California. From his time in the Navy he was able to earn and later use the GI Bill towards college tuition and become the first in his family to attend college, inspiring family members after him to do the same. He graduated from San Diego State University with an undergraduate degree in Social Science and a teaching credential in Elementary Education and remained a dedicated San Diego State Aztec his entire life. Rudy was a beloved teacher in the San Marcos, Carlsbad and San Diego Unified School districts where he taught English as a second language, California History at the Old Town program of San Diego and physical education to 28 years worth of beloved kids. While Rudy's profession was dedicated to educating kids, his greatest love was for his wife, Julie, and four children of his own, Amber, Alexis, Leea and Dustin, the son of Rudy and Julie, whom they sadly lost as an infant, but was with him every day. As a father and grandfather, he instilled in his three girls and their children his lifelong passion for sport, reading, learning and expanding the mind through experience and literature alike and remained their ever-present fan. He also loved music and passed this on to his children and grandchildren, often singing songs to them as he rocked them to sleep in his strong loving arms. His love for gardening, planting palms, flora and succulents in his backyard was his place to relax and share his immense love of nature with his family. Amber, Alexis and Leea would go on to have thirteen grandchildren, affectionately calling him Roorah aka Roofa, all of whom will carry his voice from the sidelines and stands in their hearts, forever.
In lieu of flowers or if you feel led to contribute, the family is setting up an education fund for Rudy's grandchildren and/or children from his community with a desire for a higher education. Rudy was a huge proponent of education and the impacts it has on someone's family and community for generations to come. He was also a fervent believer in paying it forward and doing good in the world through what you've received or achieved. His wife, Julie, will be able to distribute these funds to his grandchildren or children from the community he was raised in who wish to pursue a higher education and a need for assistance.
