Sumiko was born in Yokohama, Japan on April 24, 1932. In Japan, she met her husband, Clyde, where they were married at the American Embassy in Tokyo, Japan on March 18 1963 while he was serving in the US Navy. She was always at his side wherever they traveled around the world and when they eventually settled in California.
She bridged many worlds as they brought up their daughter, Carolyn, and created their home wherever they lived. Raised by an artistic father, she was also a talented self-taught artist who loved books and music. Art in all of its forms was her passion, which she followed as she watched her family grow and mature.
After a long fight with dementia, she fell into her final sleep on January 17, 2026. She is survived by her husband, Clyde, and daughter, Carolyn, along with her brothers Sachio, Takashi and Masaaki, and her sister, Michiko, as well as other family members in Japan. She is deeply missed by all who love her.
