Alton R. Nugent

Alton R. Nugent, age 76, of Ogdensburg, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 29, 2026, at his home while surrounded by his loving family. A Celebration of Life service will be held at a time to be announced.

Alton is survived by his devoted wife, Shirley; his children, Kenneth Kendall of Ogdensburg, Danielle (D'Andre) Collins of Ogdensburg, Jennifer Kendall of Waddington, Jason (Lindsey) Nugent of Ogdensburg, Robert (Sierra) Kendall of Ogdensburg, and Ashley (Jacob) Joanette of Ogdensburg. He also leaves behind several beloved grandchildren, five cherished great-grandchildren, two sisters, Christine McCarthy of Syracuse and Cynthia Spears of Parishville; his sister-in-law Doris Nugent of Ogdensburg; his faithful guard dog, Luna, and his special friend, Timothy Paige of Ogdensburg, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss him dearly.

He was predeceased by his parents, Francis and Mary Ellen Nugent; his brother, Francis Nugent; his sister, Cheri Nugent.; his son Michael Nugent and brother-in-law Douglas Spears.

Born in Ogdensburg on August 7, 1949, Alton was the son of the late Francis and Mary Ellen (Williams) Nugent. He graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy before proudly serving his country in the United States Marine Corps. During his military service, he completed two tours of duty during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Purple Heart for his courage and sacrifice.

Following his honorable service, Alton built a life centered on hard work and providing for his family. He owned and operated Al's Tree Service for many years, earning a reputation as a dependable, skilled, and hardworking man who took great pride in every job he completed. Although declining health eventually forced him to retire, he never lost his love for the work that defined so much of his life.

Above all else, Alton was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His family was the center of his world, and nothing brought him greater happiness than spending time with those he loved. He especially enjoyed spoiling his grandchildren and celebrating their accomplishments. In his spare time, he loved buying and selling items, cutting trees, and, in his younger years, hunting. Known for his generous heart, quiet strength, and willingness to lend a helping hand, Alton touched the lives of many and leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and perseverance.
