Bernard R. Mills, age 79 of Ogdensburg passed away on Sunday evening March 18, 2018 surrounded by his loving family and caregivers. As per Bernie’s wishes, funeral services will be held privately for his family at Foxwood Memorial Park with Rev. F. James Shurtleff officiating. Arrangements are under the care Fox & Murray Funeral Home.
Surviving are his wife Joan; a son Mark Mills & his wife Jennifer of Lisbon; a step daughter Rochelle Wallace & her husband Christopher of St. Albans, VT; a brother Ronald Mills & his wife Jan of Ogdensburg; two grandchildren Megan Mills and Amelia Wallace, along with many nieces nephews & cousins.
A sister Patricia Bentley and his first wife Carol Tynon predeceased him.
Bernie was born on February 14, 1939 in Ogdensburg NY, a son of the late Stanley & Bernadette (Lago) Mills. He graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy and later joined the Army National Guard where he was active for 8 years. In 1971 he married Joan O’Marah in Brier Hill.
Early in his career he assisted with the development of the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Ogdensburg International Bridge, and later joined the workforce at Diamond National as a laborer. In 1974 he then became employed with the NYS Dept of Transportation where he worked as a foreman until his retirement in 2000. Bernie was a member of Notre Dame Church and past member of the Odd Fellows. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, carpentry work and spending time with his family.
