Ed was born in Ogdensburg on November 11, 1934, the son of the late Melvin and Olive (Brabant) Carter. He attended Ogdensburg Free Academy for his education, and on March 19, 1984, married the former JoAnn Bachand, beginning a life together filled with family, hard work, and many memories.
Ed was a hardworking man who believed in earning his way and taking care of the people he loved. He spent 20 years working as a logger, working on the St. Lawrence Seaway project, various construction projects for Local 687 Union and Lane Construction Company before retiring. Work was an important part of Ed’s life, and he took pride in a job well done. He was the kind of man who was always willing to roll up his sleeves and get to work.
When he wasn’t working, Ed enjoyed the things that mattered most to him—his family and the time spent together. He also had a love for woodworking and enjoyed working with his hands. Whether he was busy with a project or simply spending time with family, Ed found happiness in the everyday moments of life.
Ed will be remembered as a devoted family man, a hardworking husband and father, and someone who was happiest surrounded by those he loved. The lessons he taught through his hard work, determination, and love for family will remain with those who knew him.
He is survived by his children, Edward Carter, Pamela Mattice, and Tammy McIntyre; stepchildren, Dean Phillips, Kevin Phillips, and Julie Lortie; grandchildren, Tonya Blair, Scott Mattice, Gary McIntyre, Shawn McIntyre, Rob Carter, Dustin Carter, and Rhea McDonald; step-grandchildren, Jason Denio and Kyle Jarvis, Joshua Phillips, Katlyn Grice and Mariah Kelly; many great-grandchildren; a brother, Frederick (Sandy) Carter; a sister, Joyce Shattuck; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by his son, Robert Carter; his brother, Melford “Jay” Carter; and his sister, Emily “Lou” Tynon.
Ed leaves behind a lifetime of memories and a family who will miss his presence, his steady nature, and the man who was always there for them. His life was one of hard work, family, and love, and he will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
