Helen was born in Lisbon on February 24, 1921, the daughter of the late Arthur & Julia (Todd) Race. She was a graduate from Canton High School, class of 1938, and continued her education at the Ogdensburg Business School. She married her sweetheart, Paul R. McBath on April 8, 1941 at the Presbyterian Manse in Heuvelton. During World War II, while Paul served in the 101st Calvary, Helen worked at Alcoa Manufacturing. Upon his return, they operated the family dairy farm together for more than thirty years. Helen was a member and former president of the Lisbon American Legion Auxiliary, as well as a member of the 89ers Senior Citizens Group.
Helen was a proud, independent and hard-working woman, with strong opinions and a quick wit, but equally strong love for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and anyone they brought home. She enjoyed catching up on the latest family news, big gatherings, and cooking for family, friends and neighbors - her apple pies and cinnamon buns were legendary. She also enjoyed playing Pedro, dining out, dancing with Paul, and reading. Spending an hour with Lawrence Welk, each week, brought her much pleasure.
Surviving are five children, David (Judith) McBath of Lisbon, John (Barbara) McBath of Lisbon, Kathryn (Philip) Stoliker of Ogdensburg, Carolyn (Nick) Pianella of Endicott, and Paula (Renee Parsons) McBath of Albany; a sister-in-law Audrey Race of Canton; 15 grandchildren, Rob (Ella) McBath, Eileen (David) Fruhling, Heather (Terry) Keach; John (Jodi) McBath, Tammi (Matt) Kozuch, Amy (Scott) Wright, April (Vince Phillips) McBath, Sarah (Curtis) Cowles, Daniel (Elizabeth) McBath, Susan (Bill) Pidwell, Lance (Michele) Duvall, Nicole Pianella, Joseph (Anita) Pianella, Tyler Pianella (fiancée Molly Babcock), and Lucas McBath; and 16 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband, Paul R. McBath; two sisters, Mildred Barker and Dorothy Witherell, and three brothers, William, Arnold and Arthur Race.
