A Memorial Service for Joan V. Hadlock, age 87 of Hammond will be held at 12:00pm at the Hammond Presbyterian Church on Saturday (December 16, 2023) with Rev. Shea Zellweiger officiating. Calling hours will be held in the church dining room prior to the service from 10:00am to 12:00pm. A reception will follow the service at the church. Burial will be held privately with the family at Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
Surviving is her son, E. Douglas Hadlock & his companion Andrea Chenier of Ogdensburg; Deborah (Darren) Richards of Colton and Jennifer (Nicholas) Gardner of Redwood; grandchildren Lindsey (Lucas) Knewstub, Sage, Cole, Callie and Maura Richards, Kennon, Nolan, Jensen and Vivian Gardner; great-grandson Henry Knewstub; sisters Virginia Peet of Bethel Park, PA and Nancy Hanselman of Lancaster PA.
She was predeceased by her husband Edwin C. Hadlock in 2014 and a brother John Hero.
Joan was born on October 27, 1936, a daughter of the late John & Vivian (Boutilier) Hero. She graduated from Westborough High School in MA and received a degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of New Hampshire. Two years after college, she joined the Peace Corps, serving as a teacher in Sierra Leone, West Africa for two years. After traveling for five months in Europe and Asia, she returned and worked for the Peace Corps in Washington DC where she met her husband Ed. They were married on September 11, 1965 in Westborough.
In 1971 Ed and Joan with their son Doug returned to Hammond to become part of the family dairy farm operation. Joan was a 4-H leader and served on the county 4-H Coucil, Junior Grange leader, held several offices in the Hammond Grange, as well as the county and state granges.
She was active in the Hammond Presbyterian Church and community activities most of her life, receiving recognition awards for her service from the church, the county 4-H and community.
Most recently Joan was the secretary for the Hammond Fair, a Director for Citizens National Bank, secretary and board member of the Hammond Historical Museum, treasurer and board member of the Hammond Area Health Center and an officer and choir member of the Hammond Presbyterian Church. She was also a finalist in the Remarkable Women of the North Country Program. She enjoyed working with young people, traveling, flowers, painting, and loved time with her family.
