

Joan Emma Nelson, a beloved, generous, and kind-hearted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, passed away on December 2, 2024, at the age of 86 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Ogdensburg, New York, on July 6, 1938, the daughter of Nelson and Agnes (Dunnigan) McRoberts. Joan graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy and was later married to Royal Nelson.
She is survived by her husband Royal; son Mark Nelson and his wife Joanne of Lisbon; her daughter Kimberly Davis and her companion Peter Oakes of Coco Beach, Florida; beloved sisters Mary Margaret Mayette of Waddington and Janice Barry (Frank Legg) of Syracuse; sisters-in-law Peggy McRoberts of Lake Havasu, AZ and Mary (Paul) Campbell of Point Pleasant, OH; a brother-in-law Lowell (Stella) Nelson of Lisbon; Joan's legacy also includes four grandchildren, Leslie and Debbie Nelson, Lindsay Lynch and her spouse Katie Terwilliger, and McKenzie Lynch, as well as a great-granddaughter, Emma Bradish. She was predeceased by her brothers, Nelson and Jerry (Ann) McRoberts.
Joan enjoyed reading, gardening, collecting angels, dining out, making people smile, and caring for her grandchildren. She loved her animals and family deeply. For 36 years, Joan dedicated her professional life to the Administration Department at the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center, where she worked as a secretary.
Visitation will be held on December 5, 2024, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm, and the funeral service will take place at the Fox & Murray Funeral Home, located at 528 Franklin Street, Ogdensburg, NY, on December 6, 2024, at 11:00 am.
