Funeral services for June P. (Stevens) Ames, 90, will be held on Friday (December 28, 2018) at 6:00pm at the Fox and Murray Funeral Home with Pastor Tom Nichols officiating. Burial will be held on Friday (January 4, 2019) at 3:00 pm in Hillcrest Cemetery, Heuvelton.
Calling hours will also be held on Friday December 28th from 12 - 2 pm and 4 - 6pm at the funeral home. June passed away Sunday evening (December 23) at RiverLedge Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center with loving family by her side.
June is survived by two sons, John (Carol) Stevens, and Edward (Karen Andrews) Stevens, both of Potsdam, a sister-in-law Mary Pierce of Ogdensburg, along with many grandchildren great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was predeceased by her first husband Howard Stevens, second husband Charles Ames, brothers Thomas, Harris, Raymond, and William Pierce; sisters Irene Barley, Barb Pierce, Patricia Lawton, Jean Allen, Cecil Pierce and Beverly Prayshaw, as well as two sons, Douglas and Richard Stevens.
June was born on June 29, 1928 to the late Leslie and Ruth (Harder) Pierce in Heuvelton, NY. She graduated from Heuvelton Central School in 1945 and married Howard Stevens that same year. She worked at Montgomery Ward before working in the cafeteria at Potsdam State, where the president of the college approached her to work in the cleaning department where she stayed for 33 years. During that time she also waitressed at area restaurants, showing her talent at making pies, donuts, and pumpkin rolls, most of which she gave away to friends and family.
June was known as a hard worker, but took time to enjoy herself by traveling around the country to visit relatives, going to yard sales with her sister-in-law and best friend Betty, and sewing by making fleece blankets and alterations for her family. As the family matriarch she was described as a happy-go-lucky woman with a heart of gold.
