A memorial service for June A. Smithers, age 89 of Gilbert, AZ and formerly of Ogdensburg will be held at a time to be determined at the Fox & Murray Funeral Home with Rev. Karen Marie Cota, PhD officiating. Burial will be in the spring at Flackville Cemetery in Lisbon.

Mrs. Smithers passed away on January 28, 2021 at the Villa Hospice House in Mesa, AZ.

Surviving are her children Merrill (Mary Jane) Smithers of Green Bay WI, Raymond (Pam) Smithers of Green Bay WI, James (Cheryl) Smithers of Hollywood FL, Colleen Simmons of Gilbert AZ, Karen (LeRoy) Cota of Gilbert AZ and Penny (Marvin) Lucas of Russell; a sister Eileen Isenhart of Derby NY; brothers Lawrence (Jean) White of Syracuse, Anson White of Scottsdale AZ, and Wayne White of Taylor AZ; 25 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-granddaughters along with many nieces, nephews & cousins.

She was predeceased by her son Ronald Smithers and two sisters Vivian Kerr and Alice Kerr.

June was born on September 24, 1931 in Macomb, a daughter of William J. & Leona (Tucker) White. She graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in 1948, and later married Merrill Smithers on October 3, 1949 at the Heuvelton Wesleyan Church with Rev. Edwin Seaman officiating. In 1973 she returned to school and obtained her nursing degree from Canton ATC. She then went on to receive a Bachelor’s Degree in Professional Studies from Empire State College in 1977.

During her career she worked as a nurse’s aide at Canton Hospital in 1962 and later transferred to the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center in 1967 until 1980. In 1982 she again moved and began working at the Collins Correctional Facility in Helmuth, NY until she retired in 1987. She returned to the Ogdensburg area in 1990 and worked at Boces in Ogdensburg and 1991 for St. Joseph’s Home as their in service director.

June was a former 4-H leader in Flackville for five years and enjoyed helping all the kids excel in life. She volunteered at the Remington museum in Ogdensburg for many years. She was so many things to so many people. She is remembered for so many different capacities. Condolences and fond memories can also be shared at

One of the most amazing women I have ever met. Learned so much from her years of wisdom. Always lived by the "Golden Rule", do on to others as you would have done to you! Most loving, caring "Mom" that treated me like one of her own. No more pain and with Dad and Ronnie again...Rest in Peace my Dear Mother-In-Law. Till we meet me a place at the table!!!

Our deepest sympathy to the entire Smithers family on the loss of June. We have such fond memories of the time spent at the Smithers’ home, playing cards, watching TV, and playing in the yard. June will be missed, may she Rest In Peace.
