Graveside services for Marcella M. (Stephenson) Lavarnway age 84 of Main Street in Hammond, will be held on Wednesday (July 30, 2014) at 2:00pm at the Greenwood Cemetery in Morristown with Rev. Steven Murray officiating. There will be no calling hours. Mrs. Lavarnway passed away on Friday (July 25, 2014) at The University Hospital in Syracuse.
Surviving is her brother Alden Stephenson & his wife Judy of Imperial, TX; nephews Lee Lavarnway & his wife Barb of Watertown, Greg Lavarnway & his wife Jackie of Chaumont, Philip Lavarnway & his wife Donna of Alexandria Bay and Bernie Rubadue & his wife Joanne of Morristown and a niece Kay McNeil of Hammond and a sister-in-law Lorraine Lavarnway of Hammond.
Her husband Bernard J. Lavarnway predeceased her in 2001.
Marcella was born on February 3, 1930 in Ogdensburg, NY a daughter of Charles & Jeannette (Kooker) Stephenson. She graduated from Morristown School and continued her education at the Wallace Secretarial School and later received a BA degree in educational studies from Empire State College in 1985.
She married Bernard Lavarnway on Sept 14, 1952 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Canton. She was employed at Hammond Central School for 37 years, first as a library aid, then as a guidance secretary, and later as the school library media specialists. She retired from the library position in 1993 and the guidance position in 2002. She also worked as the librarian for the Hammond Free Public Library for 43 years and was the trustee for several additional years.
