Margaret M. Smith

A gathering of family and friends for Margaret M. Smith, age 87 a resident of the United Helpers Nursing Home and formerly of Gouverneur and Binghamton, will be held on Tuesday (November 29, 2011) at the Kirkwood Elks Club, 1309 US Route 11, Kirkwood, NY from 1:00-3:00pm. Burial will be on Wednesday at 10:00am at the Calvary Cemetery in Johnson City, NY. Margaret died Monday evening November 21, 2011 at the United Helpers Nursing Home where she had been a resident since September.

Surviving is her husband Robert Smith of Gouverneur; two daughters Rosalie Pears & her husband Richard of Sarasota, FL and Carol Sorensen & her husband Bernard of Conklin, NY; three grandchildren Jeremiah Sorensen, Eric Smith, Adam Smith & his wife Stacey; two great-grandchildren Austin & Owen Smith along with several nieces, nephews & cousins.

Three brothers Frank Vilk, Henry Stary, and Rudy Stary and three sisters Mary Eggleston, Louise Dulik and Cecilia Stary predeceased her.

Margaret was born on November 10, 1924 in Union Town, PA, a daughter of the late Kristian & Anna (Ivanic) Stary. She graduated from Binghamton Central High School and married Lynn R. Howell on June 23, 1945. He predeceased her in 1955. She then married Robert L. Smith on June 17, 1966. She enjoyed listening to country music, dancing, gardening, crafts and spending time with her family.
