

Funeral services will be held Thursday beginning with visitation 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., followed immediately by the funeral service at the Fox & Murray Funeral Home with Rev. Rob Schirmer officiating.
Vern was born in Gouverneur on May 23, 1949, he was a son of the late Robert and Abigail (Wainwright) Barney. He graduated from Hammond Central School and married the love of his life, Marty Milsap, on November 22, 1969.
A dedicated and hardworking farmer, Vern spent more than 30 years working the family farm from 1973 until 2004. He also drove school bus part-time for many years before beginning a career as a laborer with the New York State Department of Transportation, where he worked until his retirement in 2014.
Vern took great pride in his work and loved being around the farm. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting, mowing the lawn, bowling, and playing old-timers softball. He was also a devoted LA Rams fan. Above all, Vern cherished his family and treasured the time he spent with them.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marty; his children, Douglas Barney of Ogdensburg, Michael Barney of Dallas, GA, Kristin (Wheeler) Hammontree of Mt. Holly Springs, PA, and Bradley (Yvette) Barney of Hammond; his grandchildren, Chandler, Carson, and Gavin Barney and Laurelin Hammontree; his great-grandson, Theodore Barney; and his brothers, Michael (Marlene) Webster of Edwards and Victor Smithers of Florida.
Vern was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Abigail, and his sister, Cheryl Roth.
Vern will be remembered as a hardworking farmer, devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and a man who found his greatest joy in his family and the life he built on the farm. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Memorial contributions can be made to the Hammond Volunteer Fire Department.
