William was born on May 23, 1940 in Lisbon, NY, a son of the late Royal and Ruby (Baker) Martin. He attended Lisbon country schools for education and entered the workforce at a young age. He married Shirley Ritchie on July 10, 1964 in Scranton, PA. During his career he worked as a farmer for over 10 years, as a mechanic for Don Trimm and Gillette’s Garage before working for the Town of Lisbon’s Highway Department. He also owned and operated his own bulldozer and backhoe business where he worked on clearing lots and fields, and setting septic tanks and driveways. He was a Jack of all trades, teaching himself how to repair machinery and building design and construction through his years of experience.

Bill was a member of River Valley Antique Tractor & Engine Club, the Eskimo Club, and the Lisbon Fire Department where he was the Fire Chief for many years. He enjoyed attending and participating in antique tractor pulls and horse shows, camping, dancing, smoking and barbequing meat in the summertime, joyriding with his family, going out to eat, and socializing and spending time with friends and family, and was always known for having a cigar in the corner of his mouth.

Our condolences to Shirley and Family. Anyone who ever met Bill or was in listening distance can not deny that voice or personality of Billy Martin. He was certainly an original, belonging to Lisbon only. He will surely be missed. May he rest in peace. Sincerely, Jim and Heather Goldie
