With heavy hearts, we mourn the passing of a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and mentor - a man who touched the lives of many with his unwavering love and dedication. Bobby Eugene Phillips was born on February 2, 1938, in Clinton, Oklahoma, and he peacefully passed away on July 25, 2023, surrounded by his loving family in San Diego, California, at the age of 85.
From a young age, Bobby was raised in Tipton by his dearly loved grandfather and grandmother, who instilled in him strong values and a sense of family. He pursued his education at Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma, but his remarkable career began at the age of 17 when he humbly started sweeping the floors at United Supermarkets.
Over the years, Bobby's dedication and hard work led him to manage, supervise, and support many stores, including Altus, Guymon, Blackwell, Cherokee, and of course the Westgate and Southgate stores in Woodward, Oklahoma. He walked the blue and white checkered floors for 47 years and became one of their longest serving District Managers. But beyond being a skilled manager, he was a mentor to the young men who worked for him. Always leading by example, he instilled in them the value of hard work, integrity, and the importance of family. After a distinguished career, Bobby retired and spent a few years in Woodward before eventually settling in San Diego, California, where 11 of his children and grandchildren currently reside.
Bobby was a dedicated husband to Pamela Phillips, and together they celebrated 41 years of love and companionship. They were a source of inspiration to all who knew them, and their bond was a testament to the enduring power of love and commitment. He was a loving father to Lisa Phillips (Oklahoma City), Brian Phillips and wife Emily Phillips (Longmont, CO), Heather Champoux, Jennifer Cottle and husband Dave Cottle, and Christopher Dilling and wife Kim Dilling (San Diego, CA). He took great pride in being a respected grandfather to Jackson and Addison Cottle, Blake Champoux, Peyton and Paxton Rayner, Eliot Phillips, Aaron, Abigail, and Emme Dilling, Braden Hodges and wife Kaci Hodges, and a great-grandfather to Lily and Boone Hodges.
Bobby's life was deeply rooted in his love for Jesus, and he served and protected his family and community with unwavering devotion. He will be warmly remembered for his endless sweet tooth, with a weakness for chocolate shakes, ice cream, cakes, brownies, cookies, and Ding Dongs, which rarely lasted more than a few hours in the cupboard. Even in the face of cancer and additional illnesses that challenged him, he carried himself with grace and dignity, and will always be remembered as a strong, courageous man.
The family invites friends and loved ones to pay their respects and share tributes during a public visitation at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery in Oklahoma City on Saturday, August 12th, from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. A private burial will follow, honoring Bobby and his final resting place.
In honoring his memory, may we carry forward his legacy of love, dedication, and resilient spirit. May he rest in eternal peace.
