Doris E. Tilbury

Doris Earlene Tilbury, mother of Roy, Dale and Sharon and wife of Wesley Dale died suddenly on December 27, 2013 after a wonderful Christmas, with many future plans and the more immediate anticipation of enjoying a special gift, The Best Murder Mysteries of 2013. She was an avid reader, lover of music and natures treasures, devoted mother, wife , friend and an accomplished artist.

Her adventure began on September 19, 1920 in Guyman, Oklahoma. Fond memories include mountain vacations with parents Marvin and Bertha Catherine Lathrop and sisters Hartense, Bonnie, Fern and Sally. She graduated from Phillips High School in Phillips Texas and continued to complete secretarial training there. Her classmates fought World War II. Doris and W.D. were married in Boston, Massachusetts after he joined the Navy. Doris returned to Phillips Texas where she worked at the oil refinery while W. D. was overseas.

Upon her husband's return they moved to Chicago, Illinois where he attended Coyne Electric School, she worked at Cook County Hospital and made frequently trips to Chicago's Science and Industry Museum. They spent years raising children and following oil field work throughout the Rockies where Doris developed a passion for rock hunting. They bought a farm near Tecumseh, Oklahoma then followed the oil fields to Colombia. From Bogota in the Andes to Cartagena on the coast they took many family day trips. When they returned to the United States Doris began her 31 year career at Central State Griffin Memorial Hospital where she worked in Occupational Therapy and Counseling until she retired at 70.

Doris' active retirement included travel to visit her sisters, road trips with family, art classes given and taken, properties bought and sold, luncheons with her retired friends and many garage sale treasure hunts. She attended Baptist churches wherever she lived. Her last church home was Alameda Baptist Church in Norman, Oklahoma.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, husband, eldest son & his wife, her sisters and all but a few close friends. She is survived by children and their spouses, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild on the way. All that knew her were better for it and she will live on remembered by those who loved her most.

Visitation will be on Tuesday from 12pm to 8pm at Memorial Park Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 2pm, on Wednesday, January 1, 2014, at Memorial Park Historic Cemetery Chapel in Oklahoma City.
