She was an extremely devoted wife and mother, sister, daughter and Aunt. She was not only affectionate to those she knew, but just as adoring to others in her presence. She made sure to greet everyone with her beautiful sweet smile and she often greeted those she loved with ‘Hello Sweet’!!
She was a loyal friend to many, a beloved sister to her sister Nancy (now deceased) and her baby brother Bob. In addition to family and friends, she also held a deep love for her church, Crown Heights United Methodist Church, and her church family. She was a member of various groups and clubs thru her church. She was a leader and Director for Meals on Wheels for over 10 years, an active member of the Choir, United Methodist Women, Circle Group (s) and many others knew she would volunteer and always lend a helping hand. All who knew her exceptional warmth, generosity and sweet nature were blessed and felt her touch of gentle grace.
She was born to Alex E. White and Dorothy C. White on June 22, 1932, in Poteau Oklahoma and died on October 1, 2018. Dorothy Marion then went thru Poteau Schools and graduated from Poteau High School. She was a very talented Majorette, where she was a member of Poteau High School Marching Band, the Glee Club, the “Katty Club”, Chorus, Who’s Who, FHA (Future Homemakers of America), The National Honor Society, and graduated Valedictorian. She later attended the University of Oklahoma, where she pledged Gamma Phi Beta Sorority and soon transferred to Oklahoma A&M, now OSU. She met and married her forever husband, Ronald C. Hammond and moved back to Poteau when he was drafted. She would later work at General Electric where she found a special joy and independence. Over the course of their nearly 66 year marriage, the couple raised 3 boys, Ronald Leigh of the home, James William of Oklahoma City and Stephen Robert who is in heaven and now with his Mama. Her boys were her everything, they were her pride and joy. She supported her husband and her boys in whatever they did and made sure they had everything to help them be successful. Her giving nature was often seen as she put them before herself in all she did, ensuring they felt her love, support, commitment and unconditional love regardless of trials. In her eyes, ‘her boys could do no wrong’. She supported her children in many ways, but the most important way was a deep, sincere, unconditional love for them daily. She was also a caretaker for the family’s many stray pets that found their way to their home, knowing she would love them too.
Dorothy was also an extraordinarily supportive military wife and shared in her husband’s success and pride as he proudly served in the Oklahoma National Guard until his retirement from there. Additionally, she was a talented seamstress, cook and exceptional Aunt. She and her husband also built their company, Hammond Family Rentals, where she was a very successful rental property business owner and office manager. It was very important to her to leave a legacy for her children. Even in death, she is still taking care of her boys!
She will be greatly missed by her husband Ron Hammond, her son Ronald Leigh Hammond, James William Hammond, brother Robert (Bob) White and his Fiance’ Fern Bowling of Stillwater, Niece Amy Booher and her husband Don Booher of Tulsa, Niece Nancy Kaye Nida of Edmond, Niece Laurie Allen and her husband John Allen of Chickasha, OK, David Lebaron and his wife Carol of Stillwater,Niece Suzanne Golay of Branson, MO, and many great and great-great nieces and nephews. A special Thank you to Lisa Snow, our caregiver and special friend to Aunt Dorothy, Uncle Ronnie and Ronnie Leigh. She loved you so very much and knew you loved her too.
