Janet and Jim were united in marriage at Putnam City Baptist church August 23, 1958 and were just a few months shy of 60 married years. She and Jim met through his sister Mary Lou and the relationship grew into a very dedicated and loving union. Jim proposed to Janet by letter while he was stationed in Korea. Upon receiving the letter, asking her to marry him, he sent her his High School class ring to wear on a chain around her neck. They have been “chained” together ever since.
As time rolled by, Jim and Janet had two girls, Sherril and Sandy. Janet always felt privileged to hold the prestigious position of becoming a wife, a homemaker, and Mother for many years. She was always so proud of her girls and gave them many tireless hours of her time. She and Jim’s morals and Christian beliefs were a big part of their daily life and they saw to it that the girls were brought up in a loving and spiritual home. You could always depend on the Stone family to be sitting in one of the church pews every Sunday morning and Wednesday night.
Janet was never one to let “grass grow under her feet” so as the girls matured and needed less of their mother’s time, she launched out and furthered her career with various jobs outside the home. She had many varied positions and as her skills improved, so did the positions she held. Using her skills from Draughon’s School of Business, she held positions with the State Fair Livestock office to the State of Oklahoma Department of Agriculture and many more in between.
In her spare time, Janet was active in leadership roles in many organizations. She served as a cook for the 4-H club camp and the activities that the girls were involved in. She volunteered at the church with VBS, school organizations and booster club parents, always willing to be a part of anything to help and play a supportive role with her girls.
At one point in Janet’s life, she became interested in learning how to play country music. She started lessons on how to play a stringed instruments and it wasn’t long before Jim followed. She learned how to play the accordion and 5-string banjo and Jim played the upright bass. They were so “hooked” on their new found venture and enjoyed their new hobby so much, they were out nearly every weekend going to country music festivals so they could use their new skills as a mode of entertainment.
As you can see, Janet was very active in her day to day life in many areas. She loved to learn, she loved to lead and she loved to give of herself. Never was there a time that she lacked enthusiasm or turned away from a challenge.
She will truly be missed by many. . .
