Dr. Jamila “Hana” Hofmann was born July 30, 1941, in Zlin, Czechoslovakia. She obtained her PhD in Physical Education and Sports from Charles University in Prague, Czechoslovakia. She received her Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Newcastle University in England. She was also a “Yoga Guru” with the Yoga Alliance.

As a young girl, she moved to Prague with her family, which consisted of two sisters, Iva and Alena; Ana, her mother; and Jaroslav, her father. From an early age Hana excelled in sports, including Premier League Handball, becoming National Champion on numerous occasions. Her personal favorite sport was track & field, culminating in being chosen as part of the Czechoslovakian National Team headed for the 1968 Mexico Olympic Games. As a qualified ski instructor, she spent many happy times in the mountains with family and friends, yet another sport in which she was exceptional. During her years living in England, she became the number one in the county of Northumberland ladies squash team. And finally, we come to Yoga, a lifetime love of hers which was inspirational to her community and many people that her life touched.

She married Vernon Clifford Hofmann, M.D., while ski racing in the Slovakian mountains in December, 1963. Their first born was Vernon, Jr., born 23rd July 1966, followed 10 years later with the arrival of Carolyn on 6th June 1976.

Due to the political situation in Czechoslovakia in 1968, the three Hofmanns moved to Newcastle Upon Tyne in Northern England, where they spent 17 happy years. An opportunity then arose which gave way to the family relocating to the USA in 1984.

After gaining her PhD in Prague, her first job was teaching languages and physical education to exceptional children in a school of excellence. On arrival to England in 1968, Hana’s first job was as a cleaning lady in a nursing home while learning to speak English, new cultures, and traditions. 1970 marked the year she began her dental studies, passing her finals with honors in dentistry making her the oldest woman to qualify at that time. She opened a private dental practice while raising her family. Oklahoma took her back to the field of education as an adjunct professor of Physical Education & Wellness at the University of Central Oklahoma

During her time in Oklahoma, Hana spent many content hours cultivating a beautiful garden and lifelong friendships.

She leaves behind a loving family, which now consists of her husband of 50 years; son Vernon & his wife Megan, expecting Hana’s third grandchild in November; daughter Carolyn & husband, Jason and their two children, Caspian and Viola. We love you always and will miss you eternally.

A memorial service will be 11am, Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at Memorial Park Historic Cemetery Chapel.

She held me in her arms with tears in her eyes as I took my first breath.

In return, I held this amazing woman in my arms with tears in my eyes as she took her last breath.

Two of the most powerful experiences ever know...

Hana has taught me to live and die with dignity and grace.
Thank you Hana.

Vernon, Vernon Jnr and Carolyn,
I hope it's a comfort to you all to know that Hana is so fondly remembered by so many people, near and far.
Although it's many years now since she lived here, her no-nonsense approach to life is legendary here in Gateshead, where Hana was a force to be reckoned with both on and off the Squash courts. Apart from our 'battles' on the squash court, Hana insisted on dragging me to the dental hospital to get my teeth seen to, and encouraged me to attempt to cook with the words: 'You can read can't you? You can read, you can cook!' She introduced me to Apple Strudel and, on one calamitous Sunday evening, to red wine. (I've never touched red wine again to this day!)
Each one of us whose lives she touched shares your loss today and our world is sadder for her passing. Her courage and determination throughout the years of her illness will remain an inspiration to all of us. May she rest in peace.

I will refer to her as Jara, for that´s the name we called her. As my aunt, Jara was one of my closest relatives. In spite of that, we did not see each other many times, because of the distance that divided our homes. I am trying to recollect the days I and my family stayed with her. My most vivid memories are about walking in a park full of trees and flowers. Once in Pruhonice park, near Prague and another time in Trebon, not such a long time ago, just last year. Even then, sufferring a terrible illness, she stayed calm, enjoying her life as it was. I do not remember a single time she complained of anything, pain, fear, ... And that was admirable about her. The rationality she lived with. My wife Sarka stayed in her and Vernon´s house, with our 2-year old older daughter and pregnant with our younger one, 14 years ago. Since then, she always talks about Jara as of one of the best persons she has met. Terka (the older daughter) had another chance to see Jara thanks to Carolyn and her family, visiting in Oklahoma with them last summer. Jara gave Terka a lot and Terka was really very fond of her. Now we are sorry we did not have more occasions to see her. It is too late now. We are all terrible sorry. It is a hard time for Vernon, Carolyn, Vernon Jr. and their families, for Jara´s sisters Alena and my mum Iva. We are with you, feel with you, in spite of being elsewhere.

Vernon so sorry for your loss. Hana was a remarkable woman in so many ways. She helped me several times with my quilting. I was part of her exercise class briefly at the gym and was amazed and definitely couldn't keep up with her. She will be missed.
