Jo Anne “Jodie” Ingle Hough, 88, was born July 28, 1924, in Shattuck, Ok. She was the daughter of Ted & Becky Ingle. Jodie went to her heavenly home on June 13, 2013, ready to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, her beloved husband, Jack, and many who have gone before her.
Jodie grew up in Shattuck, OK. She was the youngest in her family, having two older sisters, Twyla and Mary, and brother, Cress. Her father and his brothers were big time broom corn operators. When Jodie was 4 years old, Brother Broom, a Methodist minister, visited with her every day at the parsonage. He told Jodie’s parents, who were not believers, “I never lay my head on my pillow but I pray for this child. She will be a great worker for the Lord. Don’t you put anything in her way.” He was the instrument in God’s hand to bring this family to Christ.
Upon going to college at Oklahoma A&M, Jodie met the love of her life, Jack, at a fraternity dance. This led to a lifetime of true romance and togetherness for 69 years of marriage. They were married December 29, 1943 in Shattuck, OK. Jodie was a marvelous helpmate to her husband, Jack, who was a world renown pioneer ear surgeon and was the founder of the Hough Ear Institute in Oklahoma City. Jodie was a marvelous wife and beloved mother to her 4 sons and their families. Behind every great man is a great wife and she indeed has been a loving, guiding presence to our family. She was truly a Proverbs 31 woman.
The Billy Graham Crusade came to Oklahoma City in 1956 providing the impetus for both Jodie and Jack to change the direction of their lives. As Christian counselors for the crusade for their church, Central Presbyterian Church, they came to realize their lives needed transformation to making Christ the center of their lives. As a couple, they were trained by the Navigators in vital elements of the Christian life including having a quiet time, prayer, scripture memory, discipleship, witnessing, and Christian fellowship in Bible study and church. Jodie and Jack led their family by example, to follow in the same path by providing many instructive and pleasant memories including counseling, Bible studies in their home, going to church weekly, Christian conferences, world travel and family vacations.
Jodie has played a key role in changing the world for Christ. She has met with women and couples on a one on one basis as well as in group Bible study. A key passion of hers was getting women to read the Bible daily and apply it personally. Studies were directed to many different groups from many different backgrounds, including doctor’s wives, neighborhood groups, church groups, unwed mothers, imprisoned women and women worldwide.
The Hough’s home was always open to hear and discuss Christianity with men and women from all walks of life. Doctors, internationals, international fellows, noted patients, political leaders, missionaries and others have been invited to enjoy fellowship and hospitality with the Houghs. Sharing and organizing noted Christian speakers to come to the Oklahoma City Christian Couple’s Club was further accomplished.
Ministries started and growing as a result of Jack and Jodie’s leadership was the founding of Covenant Community Church, Yukon, OK in 1979 and MAP International in Brunswick, GA founded in 1954 supplying medical supplies worldwide. They were also instrumental in the Christian Society of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgeons where Jodie was actively involved with the women in the society meeting one on one in Bible study.
Jodie’s life verse comes from Jeremiah 29:11-14a, which says, “I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord! Plans of good and not evil. To give you an expected end. You will seek me and find me when you search for me with all your heart, and I will be found by you.”
Jo Anne “Jodie” Ingle Hough is survived by four sons, Ted & his wife Beverly, Jack Jr. “Van” & his wife Donna, Tim, David & his wife Laura; 10 grandchildren – Charles, Becky, Jaime, Jack III & his wife Amy, Julia, Tiffany, Stephanie, Emily, Joel, and Joshua; 5 great grandchildren – Jacob Creech, Rachel Creech, Aaron Creech, Colton and Levi.
