Joean grew up in Oklahoma City, graduated Classen High School then attended Kansas City Art Institute and The University of Oklahoma where she graduated with Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and earned her Oklahoma and Kansas teaching certificates.
She moved to Wichita, KS for her first job as an art teacher. While there she was introduced to Bill Calhoun who she married and together they owned and operated Cal's Fashions specializing in ladies clothing in the Wichita area for over 40 years, until they retired.
Joean's kind words touched many lives in her 95 years and if you were her friend, you were a friend for life! Her love for God was apparent as she prayed often for family and friends. Her interests included art, touring art museums, books and genealogy. She was a devoted fan of football and basketball for the OU Sooners, Wichita State Shockers and the Kansas City Chiefs.
Joean was preceded in death by her husband Bill Calhoun, her brother Bill Hartronft, her sister Norma McConnell, her nephew Joe Ledford, her nephew Barry Hartronft and her cousin Earl Bale who lived with her family as a child. She is survived by her nephew Brad Hartronft and wife Karen, niece Carrie Williams and husband Kenny, nephew Rex Massey and wife Kathy and several great and great-great nieces and nephews.
Her beautiful smile, warm hugs and phone calls will be missed immensely!
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Integris Hospice in Oklahoma City or Pine Valley Christian Church in Wichita, KS.
Arrangements for Joean are with Memorial Park Cemetery but there will not be a service. The family will have a celebration of life for Joean at a later date.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.MemorialParkOKC.com for the Calhoun family.
