Born on September 2, 1943, to William and Ollie V., in Alexander, Alabama, Mack moved to Flint, Michigan, at the age of 10. With a larger-than-life personality and a calling for music, Mack poured his heart into gospel songwriting and singing. He shared his powerful voice with the world as a gospel singer with the Cathedral Quartet and even graced television screens singing with Rex Humbard.
On July 26, 1973, Mack married the love of his life, Susan. Together they weathered life’s joys and sorrows, including the heartbreaking loss of their beloved daughter, Sharon Rose. Following this loss, they moved to Oklahoma to be closer to Susan’s family and begin a new chapter.
In Oklahoma, Mack worked as a traveling tax auditor for the State of Oklahoma, where his warmth and humor were appreciated by all who met him. He retired in 2008 and continued to share his gift for music, singing locally with the Sooner State Boys. Mack continued his popularity later in life as he was known to be a favorite patient of his many nurses. You could always count on Mack to put a smile on your face.
Mack often said he was “taking his healing flight to glory nestled in nail-scarred hands,” a reflection of his enduring faith and the peace he carried into eternity.
Mack is survived by his loving wife Susan; sons, Michael Wayne Taunton and wife Chris of Lapeer, MI, Steven Taunton of Merrill, WI, James Taunton of Merrill, WI, and Tyler Mack Taunton and wife Alex of Edmond, OK; daughter, Chris Webster and husband Tim of Lexington, SC. He is preceded in death by parents, Bill and Ollie V.; daughter, Sharon Rose; and sister, Betty.
Graveside Service will be held at a later date.
