May 15, 1919 – February 3, 2011
Born in Thomas, OK to Isaac and Olive May Deck, Naomi was one of six
children: Lawrence, Nevella, Mary, Olive, Naomi, and Lotta. She was
an excellent mother to Wanda, Michael, and David; a loving grandmother
to Steven and Michael Scott Doherty, Chad Beardain, Mandy Fields,
Robert and Paul Beardain, and Megan Godwin; a great-grandmother to
Bailey, Connor and Addison Doherty, and Kent, Landon, and Alahna
Fields. She was heard to pray, “God, bless all of my children.”
Living in Edmond, OK, she worked for the Daily Oklahoman as an
operator for the classified advertising department. She was later
promoted to layout for the ads. She eventually moved to a sister
publication, “The Farmer-Stockman,” where she worked as the production
manager and the sole woman among a staff of men. A co-worker once
created a name plate for her desk which read “Ms. King.” Naomi was an
extremely hard worker who readily sacrificed for her family. After
buying a ’53 Buick, she continued to take the bus to work so her
children could more easily get to school.
Naomi was an intelligent, private woman who held a few close friends.
She was encouraging to others while slow to voice disagreement. She
was a prolific reader and especially loved mysteries. Although she
did not read sheet music, she could play the piano by ear. She also
loved to draw. She would travel on Greyhound buses to visit family,
have grandkids over for the weekend to play dress up or cut out paper
dolls or make batter for pancakes and waffles, and always had plenty
of games stored under the TV. In recent years, when someone would
call or come to visit, she would make a note to mark the event.
She was called Mother, Mom, Grandma, Ma Ma, Na Na, Me Maw, and Pink
Grandma (from wearing so much red). She cared for nothing more than
her family. She will be missed and will always be loved.
