Ricky was born on May 4th, 1954 to Opal and Elmer Pemberton in Honolulu, Hawaii; the 3rd of what was to be 4 Air Force Brats. As the family traversed the states from Hawaii to Maine to New Mexico to Pennsylvania to Oklahoma and stops in between, Rick touched many lives and made many friends. Rick got to know a lot of people and a lot of people got to know Rick.
Rick graduated from Plainview High School in 1973 in Ardmore, Oklahoma. After graduating, Rick went to work as the first male telephone operator for Southwest Bell in Ardmore, OK. From there, he worked with a team in Montana laying seismograph cable. After that, he was employed by Mark Cuban to manage a computer maintenance group that serviced locations throughout the U.S. His last job was security for a large office complex in Dallas, TX, where he lived for 20 years.
Rick was fond of road trips and trying out diners along the way. He loved good food!
Rick was an animal lover. Especially his cats and his roommate’s dog, Spock. He enjoyed cooking and preparing meals with his natural flair for spicing up his creations.
Friendships were a significant part of Rick’s life. Friendship of his family, friendship of his co-workers, and the community of friends he developed throughout his life bears witness to that importance. If Rick was your friend then you were his family. He loved the opportunities to gather with his friends, dine, and enjoy the company. Especially Sundays at Maurica’s for dinner. Did we mention that Rick loved good food?
Another favorite adventure for Rick was to travel to New Mexico and stargaze into the heavens using his telescope. He even had his own star, courtesy of a gift from his sister, Christy.
Rick was very artistic in both the crafts and mechanics of design. He was adept at ink drawings, stained glass designs, sculptures, and chimes made from computer parts. In fact, in High School, it seemed his art got the better of him. He painted a checkerboard on a ceiling in the school and was suspended for 3 days.
The loss of Rick from this earth is Heaven’s gain. From the Heaven that he once gazed toward, he can now gaze back and watch over us.
Rick was preceded in death by Elmer Pemberton (2003).
A memorial service for Ricky will be held Monday, April 24, 2023, at 1:00 PM at Memorial Park Historic Chapel, 13400 N Kelley Ave, Oklahoma City, OK 73131. A catered reception will follow the service.
