Of all the members at Concord Street Church, Herschel and his wife, Lena, were some of my favorites. I loved his song leading and looked forward to his leading. You could tell he was making melody in his heart! God bless his memory. 

He was always gentle, whether at home or at the assembly. He also had a wry sense of humor. Oh, how he loved to lead singing in the assembly and reminiscing about his work and life in KY when at home. A pleasant brother, for sure.  It's so comforting to remember God's promises. 
 

Singing at Salem when I was a child was a wonderful thing.  Although Frank Marsh did the lion’s share of the song leading for most of my memories, I do remember Herschel’s turns because instead of leading with his voice with his back to the congregation like Frank did, Herschel stood in front and conducted with his hand.  Even before I started school, I noticed  Blessed Assurance was one of his go-to hymns.  I also remember the way he led A Wonderful Savior Is Jesus My Lord.  It was always a treat when he came back to visit Salem because he always led at least one song.  I will always be able to hear his voice, both speaking and singing.  I remember  his presence at Mccauley reunions; calm, quiet, patient, and reassuring.  My favorite memory was when he came to our house.  He was sitting in the living room in the green recliner and I was kneeling next to the chair.  Ellen had given me a frog with a bulb I could squeeze to inflate its legs to make it jump.  If I held onto the frog’s feet, the frog would appear to stand and throw its hands in the air.  I found it comical.  I was playing with that frog and reminiscing to Herschel about Miss Faye Ross requiring our Sunday School class to memorize Proverbs 31 for recitation on Mother’s Day when I was 11 or 12 years old.   Nick and I had learned the chapter together and at the breakfast table, when Mom sat down, the two of us stood (her children arise up and call her blessed) and said “blessed” in a high pitched unison to her and sat down.  She found that highly amusing.  As I told the story to Hershel, I made the frog arise up and say, “Blessed.”  Herschel got tickled and laughed like I had never heard him laugh.  For him, it was downright raucous.  It made me laugh to see him so entertained.  He was always gentle and kind to me.  He was always gentle and kind. 

Many happy memories of your Dad: our families starting the church in Cynthiana together, him leading singing in church. He's now singing with the angels.  You and your brothers were blessed with wonderful parents.  They've left you with a foundation that is strong and eternal.  Keeping you in our prayers.
