Imogene H. Mewbourne (Gene), known to most of her family and friends as “Memaw,” passed away November 11, 2018, at the age of 91, after losing her battle with cancer. Gene was born in Birmingham, Alabama on March 20, 1927, and worked as a secretary for various companies during her life including Coca-Cola in Atlanta, GA, Huckins Yacht in Jacksonville, FL and for a private attorney in Daytona Beach, FL. Once retired, Gene spent the last thirty years of her life in Florida. She built a home in Lake City to be close to her sister and some of her family, and became an active member of First Christian Church of Lake City. After her stroke in 2015, Gene moved in with with her daughter's family in Orlando, and remained there until her death.
Gene left a legacy of love, kindness and faith that will be treasured forever by her friends, her family and by all who knew her.
She is survived by two children, four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several generations of nieces and nephews. Her daughter Anna Elias, husband Scott Elias and daughter Kayla Elias live in Orlando, FL. Her son, Rear Admiral Dee Mewbourne and his wife Karin Mewbourne are currently stationed in Norfolk, VA. Their son, Hunter Mewbourne, wife Brie Mewbourne and daughter Everly Mewbourne live in Baltimore, MD; their daughter Meredith Mewbourne DaPrato, husband LCDR Richard J. DaPrato and daughters Gigi, Freja and Josephine DaPrato are currently stationed in Boston, MA, and their son Connor Mewbourne lives in Norfolk, VA. Gene is predeceased by brothers Milton Hall, Leon Hall and Jack Hall, by sister Vivian Wilson, and by husband Robert F. Mewbourne.
A viewing will be held on Tuesday, November 13th from 5:30p – 8:00pm at the Baldwin Fairchild Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 2420 Harrell Rd. Orlando, FL 32817.
Gene will be laid to rest next to her husband at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham, AL. A graveside service will be held Thursday, November 15th, at 10am.
