Judy Chubb was a devoted wife, loving mom, impactful high school and college math teacher to many, faithful Bible study leader, and a giving friend. She left this world suddenly and peacefully on December 27th, 2021, at the age of 69, at her home in Orlando, FL.
She was born on May 3rd, 1952 in Bluefield, West Virginia to Phillip and Ruby Billips. She grew up in Winter Park, FL, along with her younger brother, Donald Billips. It was during her years of attending Winter Park High School, through involvement in the ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ, that Judy heard and understood for the first time what it meant to have a personal relationship with Jesus. Giving her heart to Jesus at age 16 was a defining moment for her that charted the course of her life.
Judy was also involved with Campus Crusade throughout her undergrad studies at Florida State University. She majored in mathematics, with a minor in Spanish. She was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. She continued her studies at Georgia State University where she received her master’s degree in math education, maintaining a 4.0 grade point average.
Judy was always a passionate educator who loved and taught her students well. She began her teaching career in 1974 in Atlanta, GA, first as a middle school math teacher, then moving on to teach high school math.
Throughout her time in Atlanta, she was a very active member of the singles’ Sunday school department, the singles’ ensemble Hearts of Praise, and the sanctuary choir at the First Baptist Church of Atlanta. Her membership at her church during these years was a means of grace that significantly deepened her love for Jesus and service to others. One of Judy’s high school students from this time remembers how she held a Bible study for student girls that made a lasting impact in their lives. Judy’s years in Atlanta included many fun adventures, such as taking a choir trip to Mexico, making a foul shot at an Atlanta Hawks basketball game for which she won a $50 prize, playing Round Robin tennis, and forging life-long friendships.
A little while after moving back to Orlando in 1982, Judy met and started seriously dating Karl Chubb. They were married on February 25, 1984. Together they had two children, Anna, and Andrew. Throughout their growing up years, Judy’s teaching career carried on in the form of homeschooling. She was committed to being a stay-at-home wife and mom, all while helping behind the scenes to run many aspects of her husband’s business, Karl’s Nursery.
After years of educating her children at home, Judy went back to the classroom, first in some private schools and as a substitute public high school teacher, and then finally finding her niche as a math professor at Valencia College. Her love and passion for both math and her students were evident and left an impression on many.
After retiring from Valencia in 2019, Judy enjoyed playing tennis, RV camping, fishing and pontoon boating with Karl, leading a small group in Bible Study Fellowship, tutoring students in math, and being involved at her church, University Baptist.
She is survived by her husband Karl Chubb, daughter Anna Chubb and soon-to-be son-in-law, Will Clingon, brother Don Billips and his wife Kim, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and many friends. She is pre-deceased by her son Andrew Chubb, April 4th, 1988-November 15th, 2017.
There will be a viewing and visitation time on January 7th, 2022 from 7:00-8:30pm at the Baldwin Fairchild at Chapel Hill (2420 Harrell Road, Orlando, FL, 32817). A funeral service honoring Judy’s life will be held on January 8th, 2022 at 2:00 pm at Starlight Baptist Church (350 Hayes Road, Winter Springs, FL, 32708). She will be laid to rest on Sunday afternoon, January 9th at the Chapel Hill Cemetery in a private family ceremony.
