A dedicated teacher, devoted husband, loving father and cherished “Papa,” Aubrey R. Crews, Jr. of Overland Park, Kan., passed away July 20, 2013 with his family at his side. Aubrey was born Dec. 15, 1932 to his parents, Aubrey (Sr.) and Eunice in Pittsburg, Kan., where he spent his childhood. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 58 years, Jan, who passed away March 16, 2012.
Aubrey and Jan were married on Dec. 20, 1953. Aubrey attended Pittsburg State University where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in education in 1956. Aubrey also served in the Army and Army Reserves and was stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas. He achieved the rank of Second Lieutenant before returning to civilian life in 1958. He then earned a Master’s Degree from the University of Kansas. He and Jan moved to Overland Park, Kan. in 1966, where they lived in the same home for 46 years. Aubrey touched the lives of many students as a teacher in the Shawnee Mission School District for 34 years before retiring in 1994.
Aubrey was a lifelong fan of the KC Royals and a loyal follower of KU Basketball. He spent many summers playing in recreational softball leagues well after his retirement, competing against players who were decades younger than him. His genuine sense of caring for friends, neighbors and co-workers was exceeded only by the undying love for his family. He had a very special place in his giant heart for his eight grandchildren (Courtney Crews, Erika Crews, Rachael Boothe, Emily Crews, Ashley Boothe, Derek Crews, Jack Crews and Caroline Crews), all of whom he adored. Aubrey and his wife were longtime and active members of Valley View United Methodist Church in Overland Park, where they both worked as volunteers for many years. Aubrey will forever be remembered for his servant’s heart as well as his service to his country, community, family and God.
He is survived by his children: Bradford R. Crews (Cathy), Douglas J. Crews (Susan), Amy D. Boothe (John), Joel C. Crews (Rachel); eight grandchildren; brothers: Robert Crews and Steve Crews; and a sister, Shirley Dorman.
The Crews family would like to express heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Aubrey’s angelic caregivers. The extraordinary care, patience and love provided by the staff at The Forum at Overland Park and Continua Hospice was a priceless blessing to Aubrey and his children.
Visitation will be held Thursday, July 25, from 9 am to 11 am followed immediately by a memorial service at Valley View United Methodist Church, 8412 West 95th St., Overland Park, Kan. 66212. A private burial service with the immediate family will be held Friday, July 26 at Garden of Memories in Pittsburg, Kan.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to: Continua Hospice 13002 State Line Rd., Leawood, Kan. 66209, Ph: (913) 905-0255.
