Barbara Jean Smith Bristol, Overland Park, Kansas, passed away March 5, 2011, at her home at The Forum. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at Cure of Ars Church, 9401 Mission Rd., Leawood, Kansas, on Monday, March 14, at 1 p.m. A reception will follow at The Forum, 3501 W. 95th St., Overland Park, Kansas. Barbara was born on September 13, 1923, in Topeka to Charles and Gail Smith and spent most of her childhood in Chicago. After a move with her family to Louisville, she met James T. Bristol, then a sergeant in the U.S. Army. They married in 1945 and moved to Long Island, where they raised their family. Barbara worked as the manager of a dental office, and became a mentor to many younger women who worked there. Barbara and Jim retired to Florida in 1988 where they enjoyed golf, bridge, and many friends. Barbara continued to live there after Jim's death in 1997, and moved to The Forum in Overland Park in 2010 to be closer to family. She had many skills and undertook many hobbies over the years, but it was faith, family, friendships and bridge that meant the most in her final years.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, and her sister, Betty Lou Gorman of California. She is survived by two daughters, Susan (Larry) Blaeser of Melville, New York and Kathy (Dave) Doyle of Kansas City, Missouri. She leaves four grandchildren, Jim (Alycia) Blaeser, Andy Blaeser, Megan (Cory) Stone, and Alex Doyle, and two great- grandchildren, Connor and Julia Stone.
