

Barbara (Campbell) Magerl, 84, passed away Friday, April 15, 2016. A tireless storyteller and historian, she was passionately connected to her ancestors and the history of this region, which were strongly intertwined. She loved to bring history alive through her work with the Oregon-California Trails Association, Historic Kansas City, the Shawnee Indian Mission, the Kansas State Historical Society, the Johnson County Museum, Missouri Town 1855 and others. Barbara wrote multiple articles on regional history for the Kansas City Public Library and led tours of Kansas City and the region for various groups. She loved writing and was an active member of the National Association of American Pen Women.
Barbara attended Holy Trinity grade school and was a member of the 1949 graduating class of Glennon High School. Barbara took an active role in her children's education and was very involved in in-school activities, school board, sports and scouting. She was devoted to her husband of 60 years, Howard, and was fearless in her pursuit of his care as he struggled with Alzheimer's.
Few things matched the simple joy of breakfast outside on the back porch, newspaper in hand, feeling the sunshine and listening to birds.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Howard Magerl; her parents, John W. Campbell and Caroline Dougherty Campbell; brothers, Ed, Jack, Stanley and Joe, and sisters, Bernice and Betty. She is survived by her daughter, Jackie (husband Billy), and sons, Chuck (wife Joey) and Chris (wife Stefani); granddaughters, Amelia, Ella and Lauren and great-granddaughter, Mayla.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 A.M. on Tuesday, April 19, at Queen of the Holy Rosary Church, 71st and Metcalf, Overland Park with burial to follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Lenexa. Visitation will be 7 P.M. to 9 P.M. Monday, April 18, with a Rosary at 7 P.M., at McGilley & Hoge Chapel, 8024 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park.
