Charles was a retired disabled veteran whom has been bravely battling cancer for the last three years of his life. Charles R. Self, age 63 of Shawnee, Kansas passed away peacefully Sunday, June 3 at his home with his loving wife by his side. He was born March 20, 1955 in Clarksdale, MS to Woodrow Cole and Flora Mae Self. He accepted Christ as his Savior at an early age where he was baptized at Chapel Hill Missionary Baptist Church.
He received his early educational background from Clarksdale Separate School District. He graduated in 1973 from Coahoma Agriculture High School in Clarksdale, MS.
He joined the United States Air Force in 1974 and served many tours taking him around the world. His service eventually took him to England where he served the majority of his tenure with the United States Air Force working as an aircraft maintenance technician at Lakenheath Air Base. He was honorably discharged on June 30, 1992. After his discharge, he worked for the Veteran’s Administration, and later became an OTR driver. He also worked for an independent security company as a security guard and TSA.
Charles’s departure has left a void in the many lives touched by his kindness, compassion and generosity. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Michael. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary L. Self; his beloved daughter, Cassandra Thomasson of Weeting, Norfolk, United Kingdom; two grandsons, Tyler and Harvey Steed of Weeting, Norfolk, United Kingdom; sisters, Delores (Larry) Harris and Debra Self both of Clarksdale; sister-in-law, Josephine Self of Clarksdale MS; Brothers, J.C. (Michelle) Self, of Pontiac, MI, Lawrence (Saundra) Self, of Lyon, MS, David (Felicia) Self, of Sicklerville, NJ; a special aunt, Ester A. Self-Butler; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, military comrades, and friends.
His visitation will begin at 9am with a Homegoing Celebration Service at 10am, Saturday, June 9th at Shawnee United Methodist Church, 10700 Johnson Drive, Shawnee Mission, KS with burial to follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Lenexa, KS.
