

Elfriede was born on May 7, 1929, in Lohr am Main, Germany, to Karl and Karolina Schmitt.
As a young girl, she was sent to work on a local family’s farm when her father was drafted into the German army and sent to Russia during World War II. Later, after the war had ended, she worked as a nanny for the family of a US Army officer in Wurzburg, Germany. She also found employment at the US Army base where she met and later married Robert C. Haynes, on January 7, 1954.
After they were married, Robert and Elfriede moved to the United Stateswhere on July 29, 1957, she became a naturalized citizen of the United States.
Her hobbies and interests included gardening, sewing and playing the accordion. She devoted much of her time and energy to raising her two sons and passionately working for several years as a Horticulturist for the local Garden Center and Nursery in Tacoma, Washington.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Karl and Karolina Schmitt, her brother, Ernst, and her sister, Elisabeth.
Elfriede is survived by her sons, Robert and Ronald, grandson Michael, nieces, Karin and Elke, and nephews, Wolfgang and Bernd.
