Mary “Flora” Lowery, 77, of Overland Park, KS passed away January 28, 2020 at home. Her visitation will be 6 – 8pm, Monday, February 3 at McGilley & Hoge Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10am, Tuesday, February 4 at Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Memorial contributions may be given in her name to American Diabetes Association.

Flora was born May 6, 1942 in Hay Canyon, NM. Always the social butterfly, she was even the Basketball Queen in high school. She loved to go to garage sales and flea markets and see how low she could get the price. Flora also loved traveling. She married the love of her life, Samuel Leander Lowery, in July 1959. Together they raised a family and traveled the world.

She was an excellent cook. People came from all of the United States for her tacos and spaghetti. She even had her own special ingredients that she traveled with, but the most important ingredient was the love she poured into it. She worked at the JC Penney Outlet for twenty years, long enough to get her lifetime discount, which was important to her. Flora was very passionate about her family. She loved animals, especially all of her dogs.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lucas and Angel; her brother, Joe; and her husband.

She is survived by her daughter, Terri L. Young (Brett); son, Carl Lowery (JoAnn); 5 grandchildren, Teryn Schartz (Jordan), Brandon Young (Hilary), Kylee Young, Samantha Lowery and Katy Lowery; 4 great grandchildren, Adeline, Liam, Landreigh and Lawson; 3 sisters, Lucy Garcia, Pat Smith (Ed) and Esther Davis (Dave) and many nieces and nephews.

Mom, I miss you already! I will never forget all the love you gave to all of your family. I couldn’t have asked for a better mother, Meme or great grandmother. You gave us everything. You were a master cook. I will never forget all the times you cooked for my kids’ friends or events. You even cooked for my co-workers. “Best Tacos in Town!” My heart if full knowing you are with dad, your mom and dad and Uncle Joe. Give them hugs and kisses for me. Until we meet again. Love, Your Daughter

Mom, I love you and miss you so much. I will never forget how you were always there for me, JoAnn and the girls. I will always carry you in my heart forever. Love, Carl

Dear Flora, I’ll start with thank you for allowing me into your family for the last 30 years. Also, thank you for bringing your daughter into my life. We had our differences I know, but all in all, whether you know it or not I truly loved you. One of the greatest things I learned from you was take care of and treat my family with respect. One last thing, all the thanks in the world for all the cooking techniques for fixing Mexican food. With all my heart, I will always love, respect and miss you. Rest in Peace…Brett

Flora, You were a blessing I didn’t see coming. I’ve lived next door to you for twenty-four years and I honestly don’t know what I’m going to do without you. I am going to miss the phone calls where you’d say “This is Flora Lowery your mother next door”! You made me furious and happy all at the same time. I will also never forget a “lick and a promise”, lol. It’s been my privilege to care for you the last few years. Tell Pops hello for me and give him a hug. Also, give my daddy a huge hug, too. Fly high with Pops and watch over us all. Your favorite daughter-in-law, JoAnn

Meme: May you watch over my babies as you watched over me my whole life. I am who I am because of YOU. My sweet Meme, you were vivacious, fierce, crazy strong woman. I can’t imagine my life without you. But I will carry you in my heart always. Te Amo Mi Abuelita Teryn

Meme: I will forever cherish the moments we shared together. You helped shape me into the person I am today. Thank you for always being you and always throwing shoes at us. I love you beyond words and will miss you forever. Please watch over me. I love you Meme! Kylee

Meme: Thank you for everything. I’ll miss your passion and love. It’s hard to imagine not being able to get anymore of your tacos or Mexican kisses. You’ll always be our Meme and I’m happy to know that you’re with Pops. As you look down on us all who miss you just know that this isn’t goodbye, but a simple detour and we will all be together again. I love you Meme…. Brandon

Meme: The words to express the thankfulness and love I have for you don’t exist. There is no way to accurately describe how much I miss you already. I can’t thank you enough for everything you’ve done for Adeline and me. If there was one person I knew would always stick up for me, it was you. I’m so grateful I got to spend as much time with you as I did and that Adeline got to know your love, spirit as much as she did. We’ll never forget you, Meme. We’ll never stop loving you, and carrying you in our hearts. Please say hi to Pops for us and give Gancho a scratch for me. Please watch over us and keep us safe. Please don’t forget how much we love you. It still doesn’t seem real. I miss you Meme, and I love you; and I’ll never forget all the light you brought into my life. I’ll make sure Adeline knows how much love and light she brought into your life, too. I don’t want to finish writing this letter because it makes goodbye so real. But I guess it’s time to say goodbye, for now. I love you Meme. I hope we meet again. Love Sammy

Dear Meme: I never thought the day would come that I would have to say goodbye. After 24 years living side by side, I feel lost knowing you aren’t right next door whenever I may need you. Where will I go when I need relish or Tabasco sauce? I’ll always long for the days when all 5 of us kids would hide behind a chair together and laugh hysterically while you threw your shoes from the kitchen. You were supposed to outlive us all but since you had to go, make sure you and Pops look over us all. I’ll miss you endlessly and love you more than you’ll ever know. Love always, KatyBug AKA your wild yellow child

My favorite person ever from Kansas, You will always be missed. Thank you for always reminding me that I had family. Thank you for your love, your smile, your joy, taco’s, teaching me how to flea market like a pro! Tell Uncle Lee, Papa and Granny and everyone else, we’ll see you soon! Love you, Steven T Keeter

Flora I am so sorry we lost touch. You and Sam were there for me when I had no one else. I never forget when you tried to teach me to made flour tortillas. Your were so nice and round. Mine looked like California or Colorado. Mine were so tough. We laughed and laughted. RIP lovely lady you will be missed but so glad you and Sam are back together.
