James S. Graham, 78, of Overland Park, KS, died March 9, 2010, from complications of A.L.S. He was born August 19, 1931, to Edward L. and Elsie Ridgway Graham. Jim graduated from Argentine High School in 1949 and later attended college. He was a driver for Ideal Truck Line for 26 years and an active member of Merriam Christian Church for 39 years. He was a Marine Sgt. who served from 1950-1954. Jim was injured in the battle of Chosin Reservoir and was awarded the Purple Heart. Jim was a great family man with a wonderful sense of humor. He had a servant’s heart. He would help anyone and was generous to all.
Jim served in Fox Company, Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division, in Korea. He later served aboard the U.S.S. Worcester in the Marine detachment. In 1987, Jim began a search for fellow Marines who served in Fox Company in Korea. Through his efforts, many Marines have been reunited. The countless cards and letters Jim received over the years told how getting together to share old memories meant so much. This group, F-2-5, now includes nearly 200 men.
Jim was a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Sons of the American Revolution (Delaware Crossing Chapter) and the Overland Park Historical Society. He volunteered for several years at Antioch Pioneer Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Gloria; four children: Cathy Lindhorst, Cynthia Weaver, David Graham, and James M. Graham (Marie); and three grandchildren: Erin Kurtz (Charles), Graham Weaver, and Vaughn Weaver, all of Overland Park. He leaves two sisters: Ninetta Porter, Midwest City, OK, and Luese Davis, Ashland, OR. He was preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother, Edward “Jerry” Graham.
