Born on May 23, 1940 in New York City, Joan lived a life defined by love, kindness, strength, and unwavering devotion to her family and friends. She touched countless lives with her generous spirit, warm smile, and compassionate heart.
She was the cherished wife of William E. McHale, a devoted mother to Mickey McHale, Mary Morris and Kelly Clark, and a proud grandmother to Blake McHale, Brooke McHale, Mya Nolen, Hunter Morris, Quincy Nolen, Jerzey Clark, Phoebe Morris and great grandmother to Nolan McHale. She was preceded in death by her husband, William and brother, Jerry Kakos, whom she held dearly in her heart.
Joan found joy in her faith. She was a devoted Catholic and often volunteered at the school and church. Joan was a teacher by trade, but homemaker the majority of her life. She loved traveling and Aruba was her favorite spot. Here she would read her book on the beach or enjoy her grandchildren. Her grandchildren were so loved by her and even in her last days, she wanted to make sure all her grandchildren were going to be okay. Whether she was traveling, spending time with family, or helping others, she made everyone around her feel loved and valued. Her wisdom, resilience, and gentle encouragement will continue to inspire those who knew her.
Though our hearts are heavy with grief, we are grateful for the beautiful memories she leaves behind. Her legacy of love, compassion, and generosity will live on through her family and all whose lives she touched.
Visitation will be held at Church of the Holy Cross, 8311 W. 93rd Street, Overland Park, Kansas 66212, on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, from 9:30 am to 11:00 am, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am. A Committal Service will take place at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, 8321 Quivira Road, Lenexa, KS 66215, immediately following the Mass. Family and friends are warmly invited to attend and celebrate her life.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Church of the Holy Cross in Overland Park, Kansas in her memory. She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten. "Those we love don't go away; they walk beside us every day."
