John B. (Jack) Ferguson, 83, died suddenly at home March 11, 2012, one day after his 61st wedding anniversary. Jack was born in Oklahoma City, OK May 10, 1928 to W. H. and Marjorie Ferguson. The family moved to Wichita, KS in December, 1934 where he enjoyed tormenting his older sister with a bull whip. After graduating from Wichita East High, Jack’s “love of learning” took him to KU where he joined the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. Graduating with a degree in Business, he was proud to be part of the first class to walk down “the Hill” in 1950.
While at KU, Jack met Patricia Hancock. They married in Biloxi, MS in 1951 while Jack was stationed there as a member of the U.S.A.F. Patty and Jack were stationed throughout the U.S. and settled back in Wichita upon his discharge in 1953. They moved to the Kansas City area in 1957 where Jack worked for Townley Metal & Hardware until retiring as Vice-President in 1985. Jack held various offices in the Hardware Group Association and was a long time member of Mission Hills Country Club and the Jolly Timers. Jack was an avid golfer and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved spending time at “the farm” securing the periphery, clearing brush and gardening. His prized tomatoes will be missed by many.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents; mother-in-law, Frances Lygrisse; Aunt Bonnie Ferguson and Uncle Owen Looney. He is survived by his wife Patty, their children John (Therese), Robb (Pam), Chipp (Bill) and Jennie (Laura), brother Bill, sister Ann and nine grandchildren.
Jack’s family and friends will miss his quick wit and great sense of humor, his generosity, patience and unconditional love.
A memorial service will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, April 14, at McGilley & Hoge Chapel, 8024 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park, KS. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society. Please offer condolences at www.mcgilleyhoge.com.
