Joe was born April 22, 1931 in Kansas City, MO to Francis and Margaret Bedord. He attended St. Agnes High school where he excelled in sports as the quarterback on the football team and forward for the basketball team. As a lifelong lover of sports, he won a basketball scholarship to St. Benedicts in Atchison, KS and dreamed of being a basketball coach. He was proud Air Force veteran and served in the Korean War. When he returned to the area after the war he married Mary Ann Scharnhorst in 1956, and they were married 60 years. During the course of his career, he traveled the mid-west and also spent from 1976-1977 in Yesilkoy, Turkey where Mary Ann accompanied him during his stay and while in Turkey they traveled to Switzerland and Germany. Joe was active in the Knights of Columbus. He volunteered his time with his wife Mary Ann at the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging, now known as Unbound. Joe enjoyed playing golf, throwing horseshoes in the back yard, drinking an ice cold beer while watching the Chiefs and Royals with the boys, telling a good story about his out of town travels or just be telling a story, he was a horrible joke teller and would always crack himself up. For many years, Joe and Mary Ann threw wonderful 4th of July parties which brought together many aunts, uncles and cousins along with many, many good friends. He found peace in his family, walking his dogs, nature and attending mass.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Francis; sisters, Julia and Margaret. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Ann and four children: daughter, Chris (Monte); sons, Jeff (Jan), Joe Jr. (Glendolyn), and John. His four grandchildren: Shannon, Kelly, Joey, and Jacey along with his seven great-grandchildren: Kaitlyn, Gabriella, AJ, Kendyl, Kason, Reese and Roman and many nieces, nephews and cousin. Dad, we love you and will miss you dearly. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Unbound or St. Jude's Children's Hospital. The family would like to thank Amber, Pat, Jessica, Megan and the other wonderful staff of Grace Hospice, along with the staff of Brookdale Glenwood for their compassionate care of our Dad during his illness.
