Kathleen was born on May 7, 1923 in Rocky Point, North Carolina. At age 17, she graduated from Pender County High School, and after one year of college, she enrolled in nursing school at James Walker Hospital in Wilmington, N.C. Upon graduation, Kathleen accepted an officer’s commission as a 2nd Lieutenant into the Nursing Corps of the U.S. Army.
While stationed at Ft. McClellan Alabama in 1944, Kathleen met Captain Norman Edmonds, an Infantry officer from Kansas City, MO. They actually met while playing ping pong at the Officer’s Club.
Kathleen and Norm were married June 1, 1946. Norm’s career with Hallmark Cards led them to settle in Prairie Village in 1949, with 2 little girls, Carol and Eleanor, and 10 years later, a son, Robb.
In the 1950s and 60s, Kathleen was involved in activities in Prairie Village, almost too numerous to list: Charter member of Village Presbyterian Church, 70 year member of Chapter DO the PEO sisterhood, Homestead Country Club, Prairie Planters No. 3, book clubs, bridge clubs and writing clubs. She was always ready to serve in a leadership role when asked, but was perfectly happy to be in any supportive role needed.
Kathleen was ferociously proud of her roots growing up in rural North Carolina in the 1920s and 30s. Some of her happiest times were sharing stories of her parents and her siblings growing up on the family farm.
Kathleen is predeceased by her parents, John B. and Mary Newkirk Davis, her husband, Norm Edmonds and her daughter, Carol Larson. She is survived by her son-in-law, Ray Larson, daughter, Eleanor Crone (Steve) and her son, Robb Edmonds (Anne), sister, Mary Emily Engle, brothers, Ron and Bill Davis, 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Kathleen’s family looks forward to greeting friends at visitation at McGilley & Hoge Chapel, 8024 Santa Fe Dr., Overland Park, KS on Monday, December 4, 2017 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Private burial with family at Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Kathleen’s funeral service will be December 5, 2017 at 1:00 pm in the Chapel at Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Rd., Prairie Village, KS with the Reverend Thomas Are presiding.
