Loyal Griffen Leard

Loyal G. “Larry” Leard, age 93, of Overland Park, KS passed away peacefully September 5, 2017. He was born July 17, 1924, in Mineral, AR to parents, Nora (Harwell) and Albert Leard. Larry grew up in many small towns along the Kansas City Southern Railway from Mineral, AR to Heavener, OK. He graduated from Heavener High School, then joined the United States Navy. Larry was a gunner’s mate in the Navy and served in the Pacific during WWII.

He graduated from the School of Pharmacy at University of Kansas City in 1950. Larry purchased the Overland Park Pharmacy and then he moved the pharmacy to a new, growing location at 95th and Antioch and renamed the business to Larry Leard Pharmacy. He sold Larry Leard Pharmacy to Food Barn (Price Chopper) and worked there until his retirement in 2004.

His favorite hobby was gardening, and he enjoyed growing tomatoes and peppers. Larry and his wife, Imy, loved to travel to Hays, KS to visit family. They were loyal Kansas City Royals fans and season ticket holders for many years.

He leaves his wife, Imogene “Imy”; four children: Greg (Jennifer), Rodney (Sue) , Alan (Roxann) and Lana Shane; ten grandchildren: Michael, Dana, James, David, Jessica, Josh, Graham, Allie, Alex, Zachary; ten great grandchildren and one great, great, grandchild.

He is also survived by Imy’s children: Maryellen Marr (Steve) and Margaretanne McJunken; granddaughter, Amanda Huwe (Curt); and two great grandchildren, Jackson and Katelyn.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Modena (Leard) Smith; his son, L. Griffen Leard II, his wife, Martha Jane (Oliphant) Leard and his wife, Agnes Elizabeth (Barthol) Leard.

A memorial visitation at 11:00 AM, service at 12:00 PM will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at the McGilley & Hoge Johnson County Memorial Chapel, 8024 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park, KS 66204 Services at Resurrection Cemetery to follow.
