It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Maria Anne Campbell, who passed away on January 23, 2026, in Overland Park, Kansas, after 87 years filled with family love, loyal friendships, and countless accomplishments.
Maria was born on August 26, 1938, in Kansas City, Kansas, to Joseph Nicholas Garza and Margaret Gatherum (Brown) Garza. She lived a long and meaningful life guided by her deep faith and love of God. A longtime parishioner of Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Maria devoted her life to her family and community.
A graduate of Donnelly College, Maria worked in various support roles throughout her career and generously volunteered her time to help others. She was an active member of the Altar Society and Women’s Circle Group at Queen of the Holy Rosary and also volunteered with Meals on Wheels.
Maria cherished time spent with friends and was a member of both a women’s bridge club and a couples’ bridge club. She was always ready for family game nights, where cards, dice, and board games kept everyone laughing and connected. She loved traveling, spending winters as a snowbird, and enjoying summers at the lake with the broader family. Those lake gatherings were treasured times that helped keep her siblings and their families close with her own, creating lasting memories. In her younger years, she enjoyed playing the piano and expressed her creativity through art, especially her oil paintings. She also took great joy in feeding and watching birds, chipmunks, and other small creatures. Her favorite pastimes included reading, solving puzzles, watching good movies, and playing cards. Above all, she dearly loved her family, surrounding them with unwavering love, support, and prayer.
Maria is survived by her devoted husband of 67 years, Kenneth Ray Campbell; her three children and their spouses, David and Dianna Campbell, Cheri and Jerry Winkler, and Colleen Campbell and her husband, David Slatoff; grandchildren, Amy Vera, Rachel Winkler, Clint Fizer, and Shastina Slatoff; and great-grandchildren, Gage Ploof, Addisyn and Blake Vera, and Jacob and Ava Fizer. Additional survivors include her sister, Margaret Uzelac, and brother, Joseph Garza.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Edward and Robert Garza; her sister, Mary Jane Ware; and her grandson, Jared Fizer.
Visitation will be held at Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church (7023 W. 71st Street, Overland Park, Kansas 66204) on Friday, February 6, 2026, at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. A procession will follow to Maple Hill Cemetery (2301 S. 34th St., Kansas City, Kansas 66106) for burial. A luncheon will be provided afterward in the Fellowship Hall of Queen of the Holy Rosary Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen
