Marjorie Gaylord (Markert) Owen, 87, of Overland Park, KS, passed away peacefully at home on February 8, 2011. Visitation and funeral service will be held Monday, February 14, 2011, at Nall Avenue Baptist Church, 6701 Nall, Prairie Village, KS. Visitation is at 1:00 pm; funeral service is at 2:00 pm.
Marjorie Mae Gaylord was born August 11, 1923 to Harry Badell Gaylord and her Swedish mother Karin Meldred Olivia Blixt Gaylord of Kansas City, MO. She graduated with the Class of 1940 from North Kansas City High School. In 1941 she graduated from the Kansas City Business College, where she also met and married Richard Henry Markert on 11/2/41. They had four children together. Marjorie married Robert C. Owen on 2/11/67.
She began her career in real estate as an agent with the Bob Owen Co. from 1962 – 65. From 1965 – 66 she was a real estate agent for Ed Patton Realtors. In 1967 she returned to the Bob Owen Co. as a Realtor, Broker/Owner until 1991. She was Salesman of the Year for the Johnson County Board of Realtors in 1965 and 1985. She rose through the ranks of the Kansas Association of Realtors from 1987 to 1989 to become one of the few women to hold the office of the President of KAR in 1989. She was also named KAR Realtor of the Year in 1993. After Bob retired and sold their company, she continued in real estate through the year 2000.
Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. Owen, her brother Bruce Gaylord, and her infant son, Larry Douglas Markert who passed 2/18/49. She is survived by her three children: John Markert (Barbara) of Lenexa, KS; Sherry Rink (Larry) of Overland Park, KS; and Carol Culp (Kennie) of Overland Park, KS. And her three step-children: Dave Owen (Laura) of Olathe, KS; Kathy Driski of Jacksonville, FL; and Randi Midgley (Bill) of Jacksonville, FL. Marjorie has 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren. Marjorie was an adamant encourager with a ready smile. She loved people and was tenderhearted, always positive, and thought the best of everyone. These qualities served her well in the raising of her family and later in her sales careers. She was a wonderful daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, friend and business associate.
The family wishes to express our deep thanks and appreciation to the staff from St. Luke’s Hospice and Midwest Healthcare Services who took such loving and tender care of our Mother until she passed at home.
