Mary Ruth Asleson, 79, passed away on Wednesday, March 7, 2012, in McAllen, Texas, from acute leukemia.

Mary Ruth Houchin was born on September 15, 1932 in Cass County, Iowa, just south of the town of Anita, the daughter of Bernard and Mary Elizabeth (Anderson) Houchin. Mary attended country school and graduated from Anita High School in 1950. After graduation she attended business school and worked for American Mutual Insurance Company.

Mary loved scrapbooking and dancing. Her greatest love was spending time with her family and especially her grandchildren. She and Hugh loved traveling and visiting friends and family. They also spent their winter months in South Texas.

Mary was always positive and had kind words for everyone. She had a servant’s heart who loved to quietly and anonymously serve wherever she was needed. She was deeply loved by her family and many friends and is going to be greatly missed.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Ornell Hugh Asleson of Overland Park, KS; two children: Catherine Dundon and husband, John, of Englewood, CO, and Joni Casey and husband, Craig, of Overland Park, KS; four grandchildren: Hank and Amelia Dundon and Colin and Nicole Casey; brother: James Houchin, and wife, Betty, of Casa Grande, AZ; numerous nieces, nephews, cousin and other relatives.

Hugh and family,
We are saddened to learn about Mary. We will always treasure our memories of you as members of Swinging Squares in Omaha, and especially of the pot luck dinners with ham balls. Ornell, you and Mary moved to KS not too many months after I came to Morning Star. I have such fond memories of your presence at worship and your bright energy and love. I was so sad to see the announcement of Mary's death.
I pray that the peace and comfort that comes from faith will sustain and support you in the days ahead. I hope our paths cross again sometime...

Joni, the pictures of your mom are beautiful. My two favorites are the one with you and your parents at your graduation--you all look so joyful--and the one where your sweet mom is reading books to Colin and Colie. I know she will leave an unfillable hole in your family and I am so sorry you have to continue on without her. I wish I was there with you and am praying for you, your dad, and the rest of your family.
