John Michael “Mike” McDonough, Sr., 87, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away surrounded by family. He was born on July 18, 1938, in Wichita, Kansas, to Ross and Mary McDonough. Mike was one of six brothers.
He married Diane Marie Jones on August 10, 1957, and together they shared 67 years of marriage rooted in love, faith, and family. They raised four children, sixteen grandchildren, and twenty-three great-grandchildren.
Mike began his career in the family service station business and later worked in restaurant management, vintage automobile sales, and agricultural equipment.
Faith and service were central to Mike’s life. He volunteered for many years within his church community, particularly supporting the Marriage Encounter program. Following retirement, Mike and Diane relocated from Wichita to Overland Park to serve as primary caregivers for their special-needs grandson, a role that reflected Mike’s deep love, patience, and devotion to family.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Pat. He is survived by his wife, Diane Marie McDonough; four children, John Michael (Trudy) McDonough, Jr., Kathleen (Rodger) Baker, Jacqueline (James) Jones, and Kristine Palmer (Steve Gahagan); sixteen grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; and brothers Ross, Larry, Tim (Beverly), and Brian (Bethanna) McDonough.
A Rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, October 24, at McGilley & Hoge Johnson County Memorial Chapel. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 25, at Church of the Ascension Catholic Church in Overland Park, followed by interment at Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
