Michael Duane Verhage, 51, Shawnee, KS, passed away May 6, 2014 at home. Visitation will be from 6-8 pm, Friday, May 9 at McGilley & Hoge Chapel, 8024 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park, KS. Funeral Services will be 10 a.m., Saturday, May 10 at McGilley & Hoge Chapel. Burial will follow at Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens in Shawnee, KS. Memorial contributions may be made to Kansas City Hospice or to the American Cancer Society . Mike was born March 5, 1963 in Leon, IA, to parents Jack and Retha (Houk) Verhage. After his education, Mike traveled extensively and especially enjoyed spending time in Colorado and Alaska. Mike's mechanical talents were extraordinary. There was nothing he couldn't fix, repair or fabricate. He excelled in restoring old and damaged vehicles. He liked hot, fast cars which he enjoyed racing. Mike built a turbo-charged dune buggy which provided many hours of adventure in some rough terrain. The camaraderie of friends with like interests was very important to Mike. He was preceded in death by his father, Jack; and a special friend, Marcia Bernard. Mike is survived by: his mother, Retha Verhage; special friend, Jim Fisher; step-brother, Terry; step- sisters Gayle and Karen; many aunts, uncles, cousins and good friends. His beloved dogs Bear, Harley, and Lexi will miss their faithful Mike. The family wishes to acknowledge the compassionate care of Kansas City Hospice.
