Nancy was born April 30, 1934 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She spent her early years in Minneapolis and graduated from Washburn High School in 1952. After graduation she attended nursing school for one year, and married January 25, 1953. The family of five moved to Kansas City, Missouri in the spring of 1962.
Nancy worked for the North Kansas City Public Schools as a secretary at Antioch and Eastgate Middle Schools. After 27 years of service, she was a substitute secretary for many years, on call working at all the grade schools, middle schools and high schools in the NKC district. She went on to work for the Teachers Credit Union, Joanne’s Fabric Store and the Hallmark Store. After full retirement, Nancy was a volunteer for the Eastgate Middle School library and the Hillside Christian Church food pantry.
Nancy loved her home very much and lived there since it was built in 1962. It was her dying wish to stay in her home as long as possible. She would always say as we drove into her neighborhood “I wonder who lives in that nice looking house.” Her wish came true, she was able to stay in her home up until 6 weeks before her passing.
Nancy sang in the church choir, and played the piano and organ for enjoyment. She played bridge with friends for over 50 years, continuing up until four months before she passed. She was still working crossword puzzles until one month before she passed. She had a great sense of humor and made us smile and laugh every time we were together. She was also an excellent cook!
Nancy was very crafty and enjoyed sewing, knitting, needlepoint and painting. She even made all the dresses for Russ and Lauri’s wedding party in 1984. Everyone in the family and a few close friends, have an afghan hand made by Nancy. She also loved reading. Mostly action and adventure, and other fiction books. Nancy was very thoughtful and caring, she really had so many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Peterson and her son, Steven Peterson.
Survivors include her son, Doug Peterson (Sandi); daughter, Lauri Simmons (Russ); daughter-in-law, Jamie Peterson; 9 grandchildren: Heather Heilman, Mike Peterson, Riley Simmons, Devyn Simmons, Blake Simmons, Casey Peterson, Curtis Peterson, Ginnele Shonyo and Steven Peterson; and 14 great grandchildren.
