

Norman O. Winter, age 86, was born on June 1, 1923, to Fred and Elsie (Steffen) Winter on a farm near White Cloud, Kan. Following a long and full life, Norman passed away at home surrounded by family on February 17, 2010. He attended Baker University in Baldwin, Kan. In 1990, Norman retired from Mercantile Bank as a commercial loan officer, where he worked for 41 years. He was a past president and life member of the American Institute of Banking, where he taught for 16 years. Through the bank, he made friendships that would prove to last for the rest of his life. Active in several community organizations, he was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and an active member of Sertoma Club of Kansas City. He was also a former treasurer and founding member of the Uptown Optimist Club. Norman possessed a great love of music throughout his life, especially big band and barbershop. In addition to playing several musical instruments, he sang baritone in the "Bank Notes Barbershop Quartet" (a quartet of Kansas City bankers) for approximately 40 years. He is survived by his daughter, Paula Yoakum and her husband Richard of Overland Park; granddaughters Ashley Hunt of Prairie Village and Lindsey Hunt of Olathe. Called "Grandpa" by family and friends, many considered Norman to be an extended family member. Through his kindness and warmth, he made a lasting impression on all he met. Donations are to be made to the American Heart Association . Visitation to be held on Friday, February 19, 2010, 6-8 p.m., at the McGilley & Hoge Chapel, 8024 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park, KS 66204. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2010, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Johnson County Memorial Gardens, Overland Park, Kan.
