Paul had a love for the beach and was the first to share how proud he was of his Irish heritage – 100% Irish that is. He was dedicated, above all else, to his faith, family, and soccer. Some may say a great coach has the ability to motivate and inspire, and a great teacher has the power to ignite curiosity and wisdom – Paul was remarkably accomplished at both and was always committed to giving it his all as an educator and mentor to those he came in contact.
Through the years, Paul strived to fulfill his God given purpose of breaking the mold - never settling for the status-quo. He believed he was meant to give back to the community and the sport that provided him so much joy. In his 46 years of coaching, Paul found happiness through his work at numerous schools throughout the Midwest, including nine high schools and five colleges, where his dedication will be remembered for years to come. In 2012, his dedication to his profession led to the induction of his 1983 Lady Miners women’s soccer team into the Missouri University of Science & Technology (formerly University of Missouri Rolla) Hall of Fame; one of many accomplishments as a well decorated coach.
Paul found pride and joy in his accomplishments as a coach, but nothing brought him joy like that of his seven grandchildren. Watching them succeed in all things athletic and artistic was his priority – the only thing stopping him from an event or performance was the overlapping of schedules. The pride you could see in his eyes as he sat through the various sporting events and creative performances was all any family could hope to have in a loving husband, father, and grandpa.
While our hearts hurt, and our time with him cut short, we are forever grateful for the years gifted. We find comfort in the knowledge that Our Heavenly Father will reunite us one day, but until then, we will hold onto the memories, the laughter, and the truth that he is walking beside us.
Paul is preceded in death by his father John (Jack) F. McNally and mother, Margaret (Peg) McNally.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Rita (nee Badke) McNally; son, Michael (Mollie) McNally; daughter, Kimberly (Ken) Laws; son, Sean (Danielle) McNally; brother, John T. (Rita) McNally, of Fullerton, CA; sister, Maureen McNally of Hobe Sound, FL and his grandchildren, Margaret, McKinnley, Maryanne, Rylan, Patrick, Kyleigh and Regan.
In memory of Paul, in lieu of flowers, the family has requested a donation be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, an organization Paul had a passion for throughout his life.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.mcgilleyhoge.com for the McNally family.
